General Window Manager configuration (was Re: Lubuntu Software Center - MenuLibre)

There's a steady stream of problems/questions like this, not just on the
LXDE/Lubuntu lists but also on xfce/xubuntu and elsewhere.

While most people are probably happy with automatically generated menus
and default session manager abilities there is a significant minority
(me included) who want simple, direct ways to configure these things.

For a long time I used FVWM as my window manager for this very reason.
The menus and startup sequence were easily configured using a
straightforward ASCII file - *not XML*. One could generate nice
hierarchical menus and, more important for me, one could specify exactly
which applications one wanted to run at login and where they should
appear (workspace and position on screen).

Modern session managers and XDG etc. seem to have lost these simple user
interfaces and I think it's a great pity.

I often wonder about moving back to FVWM but there are downsides, in
particular it's often difficult to get support because things are in
different places and/or work differently.
