Space on disk much larger than actual filesizes

I'm having an issue with running out of space very quickly on a fairly 
freshly installed Lubuntu.  While investigating, I've noticed that every 
directory is showing about 8x's more space taken up on the disk than the 
actual combined filesizes.  One directory has 114 MB on it, but it is 
taking up 918 MB of space on the disk.

I'm not sure why this would be.  I have MySQL, PHP, Apache and Minecraft 
installed and I've used up 5.2 GB of my 8.0 GB hard drive, does this 
sound right?  Sounds huge to me.
