Do you have more than one sound card?

The amixer example I posted just works with the first sound card and if
that is not used you will need to select the correct sound card as well.

     amixer -c 0 set Master 3- unmute

the options in a breakdown
- -c 0 ->
     first sound card
Master ->
       what channel to fiddle with
3- ->
   number of steps and what direction- or + (you can use % to make the
lower volume levels more fine grained and the upper more to the point
and so on)
unmute ->
       to unmute with the volume up/down if the channel was in mute before.
