Recommended applications

In one of the recent Wednesday meetings I put forward the idea of a list of recommend apps.  ie. lightweight apps that suite Lubuntu. My suggestion when selecting apps for this list is that they run on a 300Mhz CPU with 128 MiB RAM.  They should run with basic video, ie. no hardware acceleration required, etc.  The idea of the list is to provide apps that go beyond the basic default selection on the CD, such as Library apps, CAD/CAM, Arcade games, etc.  Initially any recommendations should be taken form the repos.
My initial thought was to use the FreeDesktop menu categories[1] to list them, or list them as alternatives to Windows apps, (or both?).
