Lubuntu install (works with no network connection)

An install of lubuntu-12.04-alternate-i386.iso to a VM here which had no
network connection whatsoever worked fine, and the resulting installed
OS booted and I could log in and use it as expected.

I suggest that the cause of your failed installation lies elsewhere.
