Should've mentioned that in my original post, sorry. I have tried it, and I
do not get the task-bar icon.
Here's what happens:-

icarus at optimus:~$ ps ax | grep nm-applet
icarus 1586 1 0 08:41 ? 00:00:00 nm-applet
icarus at optimus:~$ kill -0 1586
icarus at optimus:~$ nm-applet
** Message: applet now removed from the notification area
** (nm-applet: 1898): DEBUG: old state indicates that thsi was not a
disconnect 0
** (nm-applet: 1898): DEBUG: old state indicates that thsi was not a
disconnect 0
** Message: using fallback from indicator to GtkStatusIcon

so I did CTRL-C to kill it and I get...

^C** Message: PID 0 (we are 1898) sent signal 2, shutting down...
** Message: moving back from GtkStatusIcon to indicator

** (nm-applet: 1898): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_status_icon_set_visible:
assertion `GTK_IS_STATUS_ICON (status_icon)` failed
icarus at optimus:~$

Thanks,
Icarus
