Hi, regarding the wiki page
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/Documentation/MinimalInstall :

Could somebody (with more knowledge than I) please add a section explaining the difference between lubuntu-desktop and lubuntu-core?

Thanks in advance!

 Hi Chris,

please accept my apologies, I should have discussed what 12.04 needs with you and within your team before I went opening my mouth. I know that you guys are busily working through wiki pages.

Ooops @ Phill.

it was your good self who told me that I needed python-software-properties back in the days of about 10.04 :)

The minimal pages are at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/Documentation/MinimalInstall#A10.04_32_Bit

Oh, happy days... when we flew by the seat of our pants and tried to get a set of instructions up for each release - warts and all!

As I will most likely not be here for 12,04 - I'm trying to get some feel of what docs need updating for the new release. The minor edits can be done as we go, but 12.04 needs to start having a future foot-print in for the day of the release.

Phill.

The "massive" diff is the add of common desktop packages, used by all flavors : http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-core-dev/ubuntu-seeds/platform.precise/view/head:/desktop-common

Except cups (which is a recommend) I can't see anything problematic. Most of them are stuff that IMO common users should not have to deal with.

If we look at [1] && [2] we see a MASSIVE increase in dependencies and even recommends for the first time. I don't think this it the situation we want? Is this change by accident or on purpose?
And to reply to phillw: I think the prefered situation should be "sudo apt-get install lubuntu-core" "sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop --no-install-recommends" && "sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop" but that is dependent on the results to the above question.

Why python-software-properties is needed ? Just using --no-install-recommends should work.

with the removal of --no-install-recommends in 11.10 on the build, is the step for installing lubuntu-core / lubuntu-desktop for 11.10 of:

 sudo apt-get install python-software-properties

 still required?

Also, I know we were discussing that 12.04 would have 3 'real' options (I do not really see the need for the other 2 possible variations). If they want to use --no-install-recommends for the lubuntu-core version will they need the python-software-properties adding to enable that option?

 1) Slimmest core
 sudo apt-get install python-software-properties sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends lubuntu-core sudo apt-get dist-upgrade sudo apt-get autoclean 2) Standard core
 sudo apt-get install lubuntu-core sudo apt-get dist-upgrade sudo apt-get autoclean
 3) Standard desktop
 sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop sudo apt-get dist-upgrade sudo apt-get autoclean
 Thanks,

 Phill.

Of course, as long as you have an internet connection. The following command should install it:

 sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop
