OK, so downloaded and tested a new 32-bit iso this morning / lunchtime:-
-rw-rw-r-- 1 ian ian  121 Jan  8 11:59 MD5SUMS
-rw-rw-r-- 1 ian ian 694M Jan  8 12:03 artful-alternate-i386.iso

$ md5sum artful-alternate-i386.iso
9d5b53d55996baafc163306188d8bb33  artful-alternate-i386.iso

The O.S. installed OK.

Ran the command:-
sudo apt-get install libreoffice gimp

Rebooted. Tried to use the GUI to run LibreOffice Writer - the splash
screen would appear. Then... nothing. Ran GIMP OK from GUI.

At the moment I am really short of time.
