Hi Nio
I installed Xenial Desktop i386 20160311 on another desktop with 
mem=256M at boot option. It took over an hour to install but it 
completed OK.
The RAM usage is here only 108 MB at boot; no proprietary graphic driver 
installed.
This is an AMD Sempron 3000+ single core with integrated graphic card 
NVIDIA Geforce 6100 nForce 405
