Hi Jim,
(Whilst this is in direct answer to Jim and PPC, it applies to everyone
running 14.04 lubuntu - we will be checking both 32 and 64 bit installs as
well, even though they are not LTS for lubuntu).
Conversations have been had and testing will be undertaken. I did a
standard 64 bit 14.04.3 --> 16.04 and it froze towards the end. It was
possible to reboot and force the completion but this is not ideal for those
of a nervous disposition :)
Timeline, 14.04.4 is due out on 11th Feb, this being the last mile stone
release for trusty. The first beta for xenial is out on 25th Feb. We will
do some tests between now and then, but it makes more sense to have 14.04.4
out in the wild and we are expecting the first beta for xenial to have the
4.4 kernel in it so that we can begin some real tests as to what is there
and what we will have.
On the plus side, apart from having to tell dpkg (the system that looks
after what we have installed and versions of what we have etc. etc.) to
reset itself it all went well. I noticed the change in the menu structure
from what was there in 14.04 to what is in 16.04, so if it could handle
moving a little application like LXTerminal to the new area, things are
looking good!
The other good news is that we have a couple of extra PPC testers available
to check that it runs okay before you guys have to actually do it. As
always, now is a good time to start thinking about how you are going to
back everything up, just in case the worst happens (It can take a couple of
hours to upgrade, and there's nothing like needing the power on for a
couple of hours that tempts someone to dig the road up and kill all the
power!!!!).
Regards,
Phill.
