The writes every 5 seconds are the result of the journalled ext3 filesystem.

If it is continuous, *continious* hard-disk usage, it is likely
reading/writing swap as a result of not having enough real memory.

How much RAM do you have in the machine?  What does the output of:

  $ free -m

say?
