HDD constantly going

I have to say that I have upgraded to the absolute latest, and my HDD
still continuously goes... There is an almost constant sound of writing
to / accessing the disk.

Does anyone have any ideas what this is?

If it can't be fixed, I will certainly be ceasing using ubuntu and going
to a distro which doesn't cause constant HDD activity, so I really would
like to get some ideas as I don't want to use another linux!
