Dear Bas,

it is correct, you have to allow access to your gmail account from "less secure" 
applications, but this is not all: There is already a bugreport created in the KDE bugtracker: 
Bug 404990[1] 

I learned from this german blog[2] which quoted the KDE forum how to solve this 
problem:

You have to change the authentication type from "Gmail" to "PLAIN" with the following 
setup:
"[...]
- 2FA enabled via Gmail- "App Password" supplied to Kontact/Kmail- SSL/TLS:993:PLAIN
[...]"

I had to change the server name from */imap.gmail.com/* to */imap.googlemail.com/* 
before I could use "PLAIN".
