Double monitor woes

Every morning, when I arrive at the office and plug the external 
monitor, I have to perform this dance:

1) in spite of my setting of the laptop screen as the primary monitor, 
the main panel shifts to the external monitor

2) I then have to open system setting, monitor, select the external 
monitor as primary, apply. At this point the panel disappears (but 
plasmashell is still running).

3) Select the laptop monitor as primary, apply.

4) killall plasmashell, alt+f2 to launch a new copy of plasmashell.


If I'm lucky, this works, if not I have to repeat the procedure until it 
works.
At times I see the panel switching many times between the two monitors 
until if finally settles on one.

plasma-workspace is  4:5.5.4-0ubuntu1~ubuntu15.10~pp, amd64
