I just bought a new HP 500-223w desktop with Windows 8.1 installed. It has 8 MB of
memory and a 1 TB hard disk. I want to shrink the Windows partition and add
several Kubuntu partitions.

The 1 TB disk is partitioned:

free 1MB
dev/sda1 ntfs 1072MB 390MB
used
dev/sda1 efi 377MB
       45MB used
dev/sda3 134MB
	   unk
dev/sda4 ntfs 988329MB	25345MB used
dev/sda5 ntfs 10282MB 9024MB used
free
       8MB

I plan to take advantage of the free Windows 10 upgrade. I'd like to shrink the
Windows partition and add several reasonable sized linux partitions and a large DATA
partition. On my old system I've been cloning a partition and then upgrading the
clone. That way I can go back easily if the upgrade isn't satisfactory. The DATA
partition is available from all the versions.

How does the UEFI disk and efi partition affect things. Can I still use GRUB1 or do I
have to go to GRUB2?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
