Print service is unavailable bad file descriptor

I've recently started seeing the error "Print service is unavailable bad file 
descriptor" when trying to print or when going into Printers in Settings. I've 
been able to get it working again by restarting cups, but I shouldn't need to.

There's this https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups/+bug/1393281 bug 
report on Launchpad, but that has expired.

Is anyone else seeing this or know how to solve it?
