Boots without graphical interface

Sounds like the graphics driver didn't build correctly or is otherwise borked. Could be something else but that is the issue 95% of the time.
Can you get to the recovery boot screen? If you don't know how to get there press the shift key just after the machine starts booting and hold it down so that you force grub to show itself.
Once you see the grub menu, choose Advanced options, then choose the first recovery mode. After the old-timey menu appears, enable networking, drop to a root shell and type in "apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade" without the quotes. That will make sure that everything is up to date and may fix your problem. Also type in "apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel" to make sure the driver is installed. (Note: you are in a root shell, do NOT use sudo)
Unfortunately I have no experience with Intel graphics so if somebody else doesn't answer, google is your friend. I only googled about for the intel driver name so it may not be the correct one, but i think it is - so you might want to make sure about that first.
