Linux version for elderly slow laptop

There are Xubuntu and Lubuntu. I would suggest to try both and find out 
which works better for you. To me Lubuntu seems to be better suited for 
a slow machine, but it is easier to use Xubuntu. Just install the 
packages lubuntu-desktop and xubuntu-desktop. Then you can select the 
desktop at the login screen. IIRC the session types are named LXDE and 
XFCE.
