I have an nVIdia card and the last time that happened I had to
manually load all card drivers. It seems that the upgrade only
upgraded one, or two, of the necessary files and the remaining
non-upgraded files did not play well with the upgraded ones (mismatch).
You might try upgrading all the necessary video drivers.
sudo apt-get install "filex" "filex" "filex" (replace "filex" with
the actual filename, no quotes)
That did the trick for me, hope it does the same for you.
Good luck!
