You do have your "desktop". Thats the "blue"pattern screen with the bar
across the bottom. Just like Windows.
Everything installed is categorized in the drop down menu from the K
button.
The question for you is what kinds of software do you want to install
from the basic setup?
Click the K button and go to "System" and click "Synaptic Package Manager".
In Synaptic - the box on the left top should start out at the top with
ALL. That is ALL the software available. Everything below that is
categorized software available. I don't know what you might want to do
so as an example, in the "Quick Filter" search box type "audio" [
without th quotation marks ]. In the box below that has "Package" will
be all the software available that matches your search criteria.
Highlight, click on, one and the bottom right box will show a
description. If you click on the little box beside a package a pop-up
opens with your choices [ Install, Delete, Reinstall, etc. ] Put in some
ideas you have for what you might want and see what comes up.
At the top of the Synaptic window it says:
"Reload", that looks for new packages in the repository or updates to
what you have installed. Always a good idea to do that when you open
Synaptic.
"Mark All Upgrades", that marks all updated software to be installed. It
has a pop-up to show what is to be marked for update. ust click "OK".
"Apply", starts the changes you've chosen. Has a nearly identicle
pop-up. Click "OK". sit back and relax.
