Thank you Marcelo for your detailed reply.
As far as I could see "settings" provides no option for cloning or
mirroring two monitors. Using "settings" is also a bit tricky because
the HDMI monitor has to be connected to show HDMI settings and once it
is then I cannot interact with the dialog because the mouse pointer is
not on the screen. I did notice that the mouse pointer did move off the
laptop screen but it didn't appear on the HDMI screen. An Internet
search didn't locate anything specific to KDE but there are a lot of
how-tos for Gnome.
I'll test this further and see if I can make any sense of it.
