Thanks, I'll investigate Remastersys but cloning will be a problem 
because I don't have another drive large enough to hold a clone of my 
backup drive.

I don't think cloning is the answer anyway, I cannot read either drive 
because of either corrupted partitions or the drive where I deleted my 
only backup. Data recovery is the problem and I may have to seek help 
from the data recovery people.
