*Ubuntu does not any more recognise the printer Samsung ML-1660.

The tail -f command shows the new lines added to kern.log as they are added, 
no need to quit reopen the terminal. New lines should show up there when you 
plug any USB device. Run the tail -f command and plug in an usb stick to see 
how it looks like.
If no new lines show up in the log when you plug the USB cable of your printer 
to the computer (with the printer turned on, of course), then it seems to be a 
hardware problem.
You may want to try a new USB cable, or plug it to another USB port on your 
computer, or test the printer with another computer to see what happens.
