Gigabyte motherboard does not detect my Network Adaptor

Well, good idea, I'll have a look and see if I have one.

However, 11.10 has done the trick.  It all seems to be working happily now.

I just dread having to upgrade and debug all the packages that I use.

It might indeed be quicker to find an old card (ie one with drivers) and use
that.

I'll have a look.
