Adding home folder/trash can to desktop + plea for simplicity

As I understand it this just means that I can have different icons on
each desktop, not different backgrounds. Or am I wrong about that?
With KDE3, if I right clicked on the desktop and chose to change the
settings I saw a list of all the desktops so I could choose each one
separately and set the background colour as wanted. Now, with KDE4, I
don't see a list of the desktops, the only choice is 'Default desktop'.
Anything I do here changes all desktops together. Or am I missing something?
