Ubuntu server 10.10 + kubuntu front end

Hi to all,
I have Ubuntu Server 10.10 together with the KDE4 front end from KUbuntu.
I wonder if any knowledgeable person can explain how to get this server to 
share files?
I have been reading Ubuntu server 8.04 Administration, but it really does seem 
very outdated.
I set up shares using KDE4 KDF and sharing via 'properties' and via editing 
the 'exports' file.
Although I see the exports on the workstation (PCLinuxOS 2010.07), I cannot 
mount them. OR If by some other magic, I can mount the the mounts are not 
accessible!!   By that I mean that I can see what is in the mounted folder but 
cannot write into it or copy from it.
Your help in setting up read/write shares in Ubuntu server 2010.10 will be 
gratefully received.
