Also, as I think I just found it, stinking xine on my machine will reset
the volume control to zero. I just found my headset speakers zero'd out.
I opened alsamixer, hit F6 to select my headset and found that set to
ought. (0) I would not recommend you use xine in any application other
than by itself. I had FF set to use vlc but I just found it set to xine.
I just changed it. I'll look in synaptic and see what got "updated". 

Ok, just removed xine mozilla plugin and installed  mozilla plugin vlc
That should FIX THAT! <grins> darnnit. Ric
