Which one doesn't work? Ubuntu or only pulse audio? Anyway, did you try 
to use pavucontrol which seems to be the magic program everybody needs.

Probably you want to install the package "kubuntu-desktop". Then at the 
next login change the desktop from Gnome to KDE while you are still at 
the login screen.
