You should search the kubuntu wiki for xrandr which is the program that auto configs X. There's a page that shows how to write an xorg.conf file to force a video config since X no longer requires one, but can use one, if available. Also don't let krandr (the kde front end for xrandr) get loaded; I find it buggy with certain hardware setups.
