Problem with KDE Menu Editor

I'm running KDE4.4.1 and trying to add an item manually to the "K" menu launcher. 

Right-clicking on the icon allows me to launch KDE Menu Editor. I can make and save changes to "K" including adding sub-menus and items, but none of the changes appear in the list of applications on the menu. 

Help!
