Stop Kmail from removing leading spaces

I believe it is a font issue.    I normally view messages (in Kmail) using a 
'proportional' font.   Proportional means that each character might have a 
different spacing....    this will tend to screw up a cutsie signature 
graphic.

When I view his characture with a fixed font, it looks fine.   In a 
proportional font, it does not line up.
