I have seen this problem on a number of machines. In my case, KDM did
not start because there were old files in /tmp.
Normally, (K)Ubuntu *should* erase /tmp at boot, but it doesn't. There
are all kinds of things wrong with the Karmic startup, and I don't know
it this problem applies to Jaunty as well.
My quick-but-actually-not-dirty solution in /etc/fstab: use tmpfs
tmpfs /tmp tmpfs defaults 0 0
(Erase or umount /tmp first)
