Kubuntu/Ubuntu does not remove everything from memory at shutdown

I have tried playing with these settings and nothing makes any difference.
One thing I did find was the Xine is being used as the backend (Mandriva 
is using Gstreamer on the grounds that it has more features, is better 
supported and is easier to use), so I installed all the Gstreamer 
packages I could find (excluding development/debug packages) which added 
Gstreamer to the backends list, but if I set Gstreamer as the backend 
that prevented Kubuntu from shutting down as well as producing messages 
that he "drivers" selected no longer worked.
