Kubuntu/Ubuntu does not remove everything from memory at shutdown

I once had a computer with Win 3.x on it. Sometimes the sound was lost 
when I shut down a particular game (don't remember what game it was). 
Warm rebooting didn't help, I had to shut down the computer completely 
to get sound working again. None of my mates had this problem (with a 
similar setup).

Now I'm not saying that your experience is wrong, I just think you are 
blaming the wrong part. Are you using an integrated sound card? If so, 
you could try using another sound card (if you happen to have a spare one).

By the way, were you saying that the sound is working when you boot into 
Mandriva?
