high load average

>From the 'top' report, i can see that kubuntu karmic on my laptop has a 
steady heavy load, about 8.
No applications can be charged in particular. Several of them take  part, 
using  20% to 40% of cpu time. 
I am wondering about other contributions to the total load average: i/o 
and graphic card usage. 

How can i monitor the graphic card usage? (mine is intel 915)
