OK, it's all to do with permissions.
When I open k3bsetup on my system it tells me what permissions should be set on various components to make it function :
/dev/sr0 (my cd burner) should have permissions 666 root.cdrom
/usr/bin/cdrdao 4711 root.root
/usr/bin/wodim 4711 root.root
/usr/bin/growisofs 0755 root.root
and of course, your user must be a member of the cdrom group.
Maybe it's not in system settings on Jaunty, it might be part of k3b preferences, I remember it being somewhere.
