I had Skype installed in 8.04 from the Ubuntu repositories.  It still works 
fine after the 10.04 upgrade, however, I was told to upgrade through the Gnome 
side rather than the KDE side as it was supposedly safer.  I never use Gnome 
although it is on my machine as well as a Kubuntu and Xfce install.  You are 
correct however, that Nvidia cards are a constant problem.  The one machine we 
have with Nvidia cards is still not working since 7.10 but that could be 
because no-one in the office really cares to spend the time to trouble shoot it 
on every upgrade.
