Open Office upgrade??

No, its a choice thing. Ubuntu chooses to tweak things so as to provide a more consistent look and feel between its main software packages. 

If you want you software as close as possible to upstream, then again the are other distributions that also think this way, like slackware for instance. Your choice which one to use.
