console font in 9.10. . . impossible with Grub2?

I could be wrong, I haven't switched to karmic yet. But if you mean the
actual console font such as most users only see if they do a
<alt>+<ctrl>+<F#> Where # is a number from 1 to 6.
Then maybe what your looking for is /bin/setfont ???

Again, I could be wrong, but I think the reason you may need grub2 has to
do with the ext4 filesystem that I've heard karmic uses... I don't believe legacy grub
can work with ext4. But you could install grub2 to karmic's root partition
with very little delay in booting the default, and chain load it from a
separate grub with a /boot partition that's installed to the mbr.
