I think Clay is talking for the broadband ADSL type of modem.  

Otherwise I use KPPP for mobile broadband (it's Alcatel USB modem) and it 
works fine. The Plasma widget turns into a  mobile phone when the modem is 
plugged-in, but not further actions are possible with is.
