Flickering screen on vga-out on laptop with Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics

Is this external monitor flat screen or a CRT?  Do you know that it
works OK with another computer or OS?  How old is it?

Did you configure your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, or is it the default?
You can always try removing it and restarting X to see if X can figure
it out.
