Are you trying to use Kmail with Gmail or is this a general question of
making kmail behave like gmail?
I don't really use gmail much, and when I do I just keep it simple (only
read from the mail, don't use much functionality).
The the former however, I do the following:
Kmail setup:
Kmail stores everything by default in the Inbox (both sent and received
mail).
I only have 1 additional folder: archive (not exactly true, I do split
it up by decade under this folder, so I get a archive, archive.2000 etc)
Filtering:
I have a maildrop filter that add a header, X-Labels, to people/senders
I want to label.
I have a kmail filter that will add a X-Labels header to outgoing mail
to same people
Search Folders:
In Kmail, I create Search Folders based on X-Labels.
For instance, I can create a Search Folder that store all my emails
between my brother and I.
This means that the same email can show up in multiple folders/labels.
This basically mimics the gmail setup (although not as easy to setup as
gmail).
For those who use mutt, you can do something similar, although you won't
have a nice search folder that you store. Pretty much same effect
though, by using filter by label.
All this is based on work by Scott Yang(1) and Aristotle Pagaltzis(2)
