Need to connect to IPcop openVPN

I need to connect openVPN from my desktop with knetworkmanager to a remote
IPcop firewall. The firewall generates a client .p12 configuration file, but
knetworkmanager wants x.509 .pem certificates and key. My desktop connects
via wifi to my home router.
I found via google a script using openssl commands to convert the .p12 file to
3 x.509 files (CA, cert and key), and set them knetworkmanager doesn't seem to
do anything with them. Right clicking on the task bar icon reveals the VPN I
configured, but no right click on it only shows a grayed-out "Copy IP Address"
and "Properties".
What have I not done properly? Thanks for any help.
