I second that. I had a terrible time to get java working with firefox on Hardy 
and  Jaunty...you may look at the thread

The whole thing is somewhat more elaborate than just " sudo aptitude install 
sun-java6-jre", you have to put symlinks to java in FireFox folder, you will 
find details in the thread or on the net.
For me the goal was to have <http://www.ch.map24.com/>display in a separate 
window, as it did on my old SuSe, either on Firefox or in Konkerror and I 
still can't explain why I found it so difficult (it now works for me on both 
Hardy and Jaunty). I hope things will be easier for you and I will try to 
follow this thread...but don't expect me to be very reactive cause I will 
soon take  a week hollydays away from my computer.
