Woohoo, now that I have that annoying logout problem out of the way, it
is back to grub.

To conclude, it appears that I will have just reinstall and put /boot in
its own partition. I don't know what the Linux kernel does but after it
loads up once, all subsequent warm reboots will not suffer from the
problem. Once you shutdown the machine, that is it. grub 1.5 error 18.
So I take it all back about something reinstalling grub at shutdown time.

In case Goh Lip is wondering whether this old man decided to give grub2
a spin, the answer is yes I did. It appears that Goh Lip thinks way too
highly of grub2 or at least of the version that comes with Jaunty
repository. grub2 could not get past the problem too. I get 'out of
disk' error and I am dropped into the grub recovery console. In case you
are wondering, lsmod says pc and ext2 are loaded. So much for grub2.

Time to look at any possible ext3 resizing solutions before going
through a complete reinstall.
