I had an nvidia 5400 LE with a similar problem on Hardy.  I had to use a 
different version of the driver.  I thought of it as it's an older card, try an 
older driver.  
The available packages should be nvidia-glx-173, -96, & -73.  Try installing 
the highest number and work backwards if it doesn't fix the problem.  I didn't 
really notice much difference between them, well except that the display 
worked.
