What you can do is what I am doing: running Hardy as main and trying out 
Karmic in a virtual machine. I use Virtualbox with few problems, you may 
prefer other choice.

Doing so I believe has made me appreciate the KDE4 and get me ready to 
transfer - that I will do some time this month, work and such admitting.
