Well, I just plugged in my Canon USB LiDE scanner, never used it on Linux before. I fired up XSane and one minute later I had a full scan of an A4 sheet saved to disc and opened in GiMP. If this was Windows I'd still be installing drivers ;)

I know this isn't much help, but I'd suggest you need to either try XSane or get a better scanner... :)
