Wicd    try it, you'll like it.

I have installed karmic about 6 times on various machine and I never can get 
it to connect wireless using knetworkmanager.   Always have to hook up a wire 
and install wicd.

There must be a way, but I always waste about a half hour trying to find it 
before I give up.
