Urgent help needed - desktop/ screen Kubuntu Karmic does not function at all!

p.s. Just noticed. If you don't see a cashew shaped thingy on the righthand
end of your panel, it is because you have widgets locked. Just right click on
the panel and unlock widgets, then you will see the panel cashew. You could
also at this point just right click on the panel again and the context menu
will have a "panel options, panel settings" choice.
